Our winter squash harvest – video!

Dear friends, it has been a long time and I apologize for that. The thing is, ever since I handed in my manuscript last year, I’ve felt a bit like a wrung out cloth – all the words gone. I kept writing articles since that’s how I make a living but for a long time, it was a struggle. Only recently have I started to feel excited about writing again. What helped was time (that usually helps) but also stepping away from writing and doing something new, something different – we started a YouTube channel on gardening. Actually, it’s two channels: one in Dutch which is called ‘Tuin smakelijk‘ and another one in English called (what else) ‘GrownToCook‘.

So I would like to invite you to have look – here’s a video about the 7 varieties of squash we grew last year:

And there’s also a tour of our kitchen garden:

I hope you enjoy this window into our garden and please let me know if there’s something you would like me to make a video about!

Thank you for the video! I just wondered what you use as mulch…?
    Thank you! Rachel

Hi Rachel, I use different organic materials as mulch: straw, grass clippings, cocoa shells… depending on the vegetables growing in the bed. You can see a bit about that in the first video (tour of our garden). I would like to do a video on this topic in the future!

The variety of squash that are available is just wonderful. Glad to see you’re growing several. I need to make a note of that butternut you have. I grew a bush one and got a lot of fruits but most have skinny necks with less flesh.

Squash are amazing! I hope to grow lots of other varieties next year 🙂 The butternutsquash is called ‘Harrier F1’ and I got the seeds from Thompson&Morgan but it might be available in the States too. It did so well that I’ll definitely grow it next year again.

Hello! I’m fairly new to your site, but I love it and the videos!! A quick suggestion, you may think about adding English subtitles to your Dutch videos. I’d love to watch/subcribe there also, since I see you have a few more there. I’d love to learn more about how to permaculture garden. It seems as though you write a lot about it in other places. It would be awesome if you could post a few links for folks getting started and wanting to know more in English. I find there aren’t very good resources for it without having to really dig 🙂 thanks again!

Thank you, Eve! So lovely to hear you like my videos! I’ll consider adding subtitles to my Dutch videos but hopefully I’ll also be able to make more in English. I have written some articles for the Permaculture Magazine in the past if you’re interested, e.g. this one: https://www.permaculture.co.uk/issue/summer-2015. There are plenty of gardening posts in the archives here too, check out the ‘Garden Jobs this month’ series! The best resource is my book, but that is unfortunatelly only available in Dutch 🙁
